Gulyás Gyula was born in 1944 into a middle-class, intellectual family. He was a child in the 1950s, an early teenager in ’56, and reached adulthood during the period euphemistically referred to as the country’s consolidation – that is, the era when, after the crushed revolution, the Party’s expectation of cooperation in exchange for certain concessions gradually became an internalised necessity for the population.
