Teodóra Uhrik / Dóra Uhrik, dance artist, ballet master, choreographer, dance educator, university professor, recipient of the Kossuth and Liszt Prizes, Meritorious Artist, founding member of the Pécs Ballet and currently its Managing Director, lifelong member of the Pécs National Theatre and the Society of Immortals, and recognized as Artist of the Nation.

She was born on August 27, 1943, in Budapest. She first encountered dance as a very young child when her mother enrolled her in the popular ballet school of Edit Jármay. By 1949, at the age of six, her name already appeared on the program of the Jármay Studio’s exam performance. (The children performed on the stage of the Small Hall of the Academy of Music, with participation from artists of the State Opera House and students of the Ballet Studio: in the production Cirkusz (Circus), in the “Penguin Parade” scene, Viktor Róna played the Ringmaster and one of the little Penguins was Dóra Uhrik; in the piece Erdei mese (Forest Tale), she danced alongside Katalin Györgyfalvay, who played the Forest Blacksmith, while Uhrik Dóra appeared as the Dancing Fairy.)

In 1951, she became a student at the State Ballet Institute (today the Hungarian Dance University), where her teachers included Karola Szalay, Magda Mák, György Lőrinc, and Irén Bartos. Following her student years at the Institute, the freshly graduated, barely seventeen-year-old dancer came under the mentorship of Imre Eck, who became her most influential master, both professionally and personally.

When Eck recruited nearly the entire graduating class of 1960 from the Ballet Institute to Pécs (in addition to Dóra Uhrik, this included Eszter Árva, Mária Bretus, Cecília Esztergályos, Zoltán Fülöp, János Hetényi, Mária Major, Sándor Tóth, Boldizsár Weöreös, and invitations extended to the previous year’s graduates: Márta Rónay, Ferenc Csifó, Antal Fodor, Ilona Medveczky, and Gabriella Stimácz). At first, the young dancers found it deeply unsettling that they had been assigned to a theatre in a provincial city and would have to begin their artistic careers far from the capital and the State Opera House. (András Rajk, in a contemporary review of the 1960 graduating class’s exam performance published in Népszava, specifically praised the high level of the students’ performance, while noting that it was problematic that that year the country’s first music and dance theatre, the Hungarian State Opera House, had been able to recruit only a single dancer from that remarkably talented graduating class.)

Imre Eck, however, was determined to prove that a new, significant intellectual and artistic workshop could emerge from a provincial city. His talent, enthusiasm, boundless energy, and unique working methods soon inspired the young dancers who had relocated to Pécs. As the dance division of the Pécs National Theatre, they formed the country’s first modern ballet company. According to the company’s website: "The abilities and training of the contracted team, their receptiveness, and their performing and dancing talent happily coincided with Eck’s artistic vision. The emerging personalities of the dancers prompted Imre Eck to articulate tasks and roles tailored to their individual characters. Step by step, performance by performance, Eck developed the young dancers’ talent and spirit, and thus the great work, the Pécs Ballet, began..."

Dóra Uhrik reflected on this period as follows:

“…when our class was relocated from the capital to Pécs, we were terribly discouraged. But Imre Eck began working with us with incredible fire and enthusiasm. Within a few weeks, he instilled in us the awareness that we possessed something extra, something that only we could offer.” [1]

“With Imre Eck, we had to dance completely differently from what we had learned at the Institute. Wonders previously unknown to us.” [2]

“…the excitement of his style did not lie in technique, because he was not a trained ballet dancer. He had made his career as a character performer at the Opera and assisted various directors. He learned everything in a self-taught manner, yet he was a fantastically talented individual in every respect, and he surrounded himself with people of similar ability: composers, dramaturgs, writers. At the Opera, they performed fairy-tale ballets and works by Harangozó, while with us, one-act pieces emerged that explored themes of human relationships and social conditions. We worked with young, contemporary composers who could not have made their voices heard elsewhere at that time. Our productions also involved representatives of other arts: for example, set elements were often designed by visual artists, bringing an innovative world to the stage. Eck’s directorial knowledge was extraordinary.” [3]

“…he brought to ballet an artistic breakthrough previously unknown to us, whose conceptual world resonates with the modern human. We learned so much from him, more than a dancer ever needs on stage – diligence, moral integrity. We worked under difficult conditions, without even a proper rehearsal space. (…) Yet one memorable success after another emerged during performances both in Hungary and abroad.” [4]

“In the studio, I believe, work takes place where the creative choreographer and the dancers participating in the creation are equal collaborators. In this sense, the Pécs Ballet was a workshop. Imre did not issue orders; he built from his dancers, drew upon their personal qualities, developed them, and expanded them.” [5]

“Under Imre Eck’s guidance, I began to take shape. It is a true Pygmalion story, because he breathed life into me and taught me everything.” [6]

With its explosive premieres in the 1960s – such as Az iszonyat balladája (The Ballad of Horror), Változatok egy találkozásra (Variations on a Meeting), Concerto a szivárvány színeire (Concerto for the Colors of the Rainbow), Divertimento (1961), Études, Pókháló (The Spider’s Web) (1962), Hétköznapi requiem (Everyday Requiem), Nyitány (Overture) (1963), A fából faragott királyfi (The Wooden Prince), Etűdök kékben (Études in Blue) (1964), Concerto, Passacaglia, Prometheus (1965), Don Juan (1966), Five Studies – Cinque Studi (1967), Pokoljárás (Journey Through Hell) (1968), and A veronai szerelmesek mártíriuma (The Martyrdom of the Lovers of Verona) (1969) – the Pécs Ballet entered dance history. “Imre Eck’s artistry initiated the paradigm shift that allowed modern ballet and modern dance to develop in Hungary,” reads a quotation from the Pécs Ballet website.

“We moved away from the clearly dominant vocabulary of classical ballet at the time, as well as from its thematic world (…). Yet we did not know modern techniques at all; no alternative movement systems from the other side of the Iron Curtain had reached us. (…) We emerged at a very fortunate moment, because it became evident that there was enormous intellectual interest in what we were doing. Generations grew up with us.” [5]

About the premiere of the company’s first work, The Ballad of Horror, Bulcsú Bertha wrote almost awestruck in the Esti Pécsi Napló on January 5, 1961:

"Last night, after several months of preparation, Imre Eck’s ballet company made its debut. The impact of the opening scenes was staggering. Sándor Szokolay’s opening chords and the movements of the three ‘Ash Gray’ figures defined the content, ideology, and artistic level of the new Hungarian ballet. In an instant, they created not only the premiere but also the atmosphere of contemporary ballet. Eck Imre’s choreography did not prioritize spectacle, but intellectual content. The movements are abstract, beautiful in themselves, but Eck Imre’s ballet cannot be watched in that way alone, because every movement carries meaning. … The expressive power of Sándor Szokolay’s music was the most wonderful. With a few violin notes, he could create hope and intimate moments on a stage where at times a torture stake stood; at other times, with increasing rhythm, he could almost draw heat from the nerves of the audience and freeze the soul. Eck Imre’s choreography joined the music with extraordinary harmony. Through movement, he revealed people’s inner life, but alongside the individual, he also revealed an era..."

"At that time, the whole of Budapest came to Pécs, and in fact audiences came from all over the country. It was already remarkable that a young, independent ballet company was founded outside the capital. It took two years for our reputation to reach the wider world." [7] recalled Zsuzsa Végvári, ballet artist and ballet master (she joined the Pécs Ballet in 1962 and, from 1963, became the permanent assistant and rehearsal director for her husband Imre Eck’s works, in addition to her stage roles).

Dóra Uhrik was an active participant and an essential pillar of this almost euphoric period: she became a member of the Pécs Ballet in 1961 and, from 1967, its lead soloist. Contemporary critics highlighted her dramatic expressiveness, versatile character interpretation, and intelligence. She performed numerous roles, including leading roles, and participated in almost all of the company’s international tours.

"They saw a novelty coming from behind the Iron Curtain in us, which made us very exciting for the West. We toured the whole world. (…) We had enormous success. Despite the fact that modern dance was already established abroad, our performances, through their thoughtfulness and the dedication of the performers, could captivate the audience." [8]

The company received its first invitation to Western Europe in 1962, at the Helsinki World Youth Festival. Later that same year, they performed in West Germany, and in the spring of 1963, they embarked on a three-week guest performance at the Piccadilly Theatre in London, winning the hearts of the English audience. Up until the 1980s, in addition to the Soviet Union and the “friendly” countries of the Eastern Bloc, they performed as guests in Sweden, Norway, Austria, France, Italy, Syria, Lebanon, the United States, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Tunisia, and Cuba.

From 1969 onward, although Imre Eck remained a defining figure and the artistic director of the company, Sándor Tóth took over as the company’s administrative director. The artistic approach shifted somewhat – for example, from that point onward, guest choreographers also joined the company, including internationally renowned names such as Mats Ek and Alberto Alonso – but the series of highly successful Pécs Ballet performances, and Dóra Uhrik’s iconic roles, continued without interruption (e.g., in the choreographies of Gyula Harangozó, Imre Eck, and Sándor Tóth), including Csárdajelenet (A County Tavern Scene, 1970), a Magyar babák (Hungarian Dolls, 1971), and Metropolis (1972).

In December 1972, Uhrik Dóra gave birth to her child – the first among the company’s dancers – her son Iván Kamarás, who would later become a Jászai Award-winning actor. By the autumn of 1973, after only a few months’ break, the audience saw her dancing again in Eck’s Faust Symphony. In October 1974, during the Balettek fehérben (Ballets in White) evening, Sándor Tóth’s choreography Sikoltások (Screams – to the 4th movement of Mahler’s 9th Symphony) premiered, with Uhrik performing the lead role brilliantly. “We have seen the search, development, fulfillment, and conflicts of love danced many times and in many ways, but rarely so poetically. We especially highlight Dóra Uhrik’s performance – she did not just dance; she truly lived through the transformations and devotion of the Woman – her personality literally burned on stage.” [9]

In 1975, the Pécs National Theatre awarded Uhrik Dóra the Pro Teatro ring. On this occasion, in Dunántúli Napló, choreographer Sándor Tóth, director of the Pécs Ballet, outlined Uhrik Dóra’s artistic and dance development as he saw it:

“Her versatile talent was revealed through a long series of roles: Pókháló (The Spider’s Web), Overture, Mit takar a kalapod? (What Lies Beneath Your Hat?), Passacaglia… In every role, she was different, exciting, individual, and inimitable. Then came a major encounter: in the ballet Études in Blue by Vivaldi, her performance had a unique character – an enormous success. This role was a turning point in her artistic career. It established her own form of intellectual dance, which became a cornerstone for the next generation. After that, there was no stopping; the creators sought her as a partner and always found her in her radiant personality. She sincerely believes in the power of art and the human being, which makes her performances credible and understandable. Then came the subsequent productions: A County Tavern Scene, The Martyrdom of the Lovers of Verona… Her work gradually crystallized into a concept, and this many-year effort established Dóra Uhrik as a defining figure in Hungarian dance.” [10]

Her work was recognized in 1976 with the Liszt Prize. Dénes Földessy summarized the awardee in Dunántúli Napló: “From the pioneering, risk-taking phase to international recognition – the fate of the Pécs Ballet is also her fate.” [11] In Sándor Tóth’s ballet adaptation of Arnold Schönberg’s symphonic poem Die Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), Uhrik’s performance was hailed by the press as one of the peak achievements of her dance career up to that point. Critic Zsuzsa Kaán praised: “In Transfigured Night (…) her dance in the role of the Mother is expressive, with a wide emotional range; every movement is dynamic, suggestive, pulsating with constant psychological tension. In Screams (…) the portrayal of the female character perhaps demands an even more complex, mature artistic temperament and fully developed individuality. On stage, she lives through years of experience – from the fairy-tale bliss of first love to countless senseless adventures observed with bitter self-mockery, through moments of intense passion when she is left alone, until, in the final despair, she unexpectedly finds a true partner. Her performance is profoundly truthful and reassuringly empowering. She dances as if every smallest gesture is created there, before our eyes, on stage.” [12]

That same year, the regional studio of Hungarian Television in Pécs produced a portrait film of Uhrik Dóra entitled Études in Blue, incorporating her own reflections, choreographed and directed by Eck (editor: László Bükkösdi, cinematographer: György Bárány). In the film, the ballerina also sings, and in one scene she interprets a text herself – from Thomas Mann’s Joseph and His Brothers – which, as she explained, was jointly interpreted with choreographer Imre Eck through dance.

In March 1980, Uhrik Dóra’s first solo performance evening (Dóri) took place on the stage of the Youth House in Pécs, again with Eck Imre as editor, director, mentor, and friend. The six-piece program included dance to live music, dance to poetry, “concerto in folk dance and ballet form,” a prose monologue, and a humorous farce. (The program featured: Kricskovics: Ősi ének (Ancient Song), István Pákolitz: Luceat, Eck: Requiem, Eck: Putifárné (Potiphar’s Wife), Britten-Eck: Hat metamorfózis szóló oboára (Six Metamorphoses for Solo Oboe), Eck: Pygmalion, and excerpts from P. Weiss’ comedy The Torments of Mr. Mockinpot under the title Három bohóc (Three Clowns).)

The artist once again demonstrated her outstanding, cross-genre talent. “The expressive tool of ballet is the human body, movement, and Uhrik Dóra began the evening, the first piece, with a motion of her eyes. From that barely perceptible flicker, she unfolded everything else – the entirety of pain, reverence, play, challenge, feminine flirtation, failure – and filled the entire stage, the entire evening, with them. We witnessed a paraphrase of the highly successful performance of Verdi’s Requiem, initiated by István Pákolitz’s poem Luceat. Uhrik Dóra danced to a human voice reciting Pákolitz’s poem, then to the Thomas Mann text in the following scene. She performed Potiphar’s Wife’s monologue convincingly, with the immersion of an actress, and likewise appeared as an actor in the final scene, Three Clowns. Of course, she never denied her mime and ballet roots. Uhrik Dóra was a true discovery as an actress, who perfectly identified with Peter Weiss’s grotesque, absurd world.” [13]

Here are just a few works in which audiences could see Uhrik Dóra perform in the early 1980s: Dante Symphony, Othello, Salome (1980), A kékszakállú herceg vára (Bluebeard’s Castle), Éden után (After Eden) (1981), Medea, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1982), Danaids, St. Matthew Passion (1983), Cinema Fantaisie, Hőhalál (Death by Heat), and the revived Transfigured Night (1984).

Meanwhile, in 1982, Dóra’s second child was born (her daughter, Anna Lovas, is a visual artist. Dóra Uhrik's husband – still today – is Pál Lovas, principal dancer of the Pécs Ballet as well as her fellow artist and teacher. That same year, she was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist. On this occasion, the magazine Tükör published an interview with her, highlighting not only her ballet career but also her achievements in musicals and operettas – such as Gentlemen (1969), Chicago (1981), and Kiss Me, Kate (1981) – as well as in singing-dancing and dramatic lead roles. She explained: “I feel that anything related to the theater is close to me. If I am capable of something, it is also my duty to do it. True, the first utterance is always difficult, and the first step is also hard when learning a new dance.”

Her interviewer, the article’s author Lívia Fuchs, characterized her versatile artistry: “Uhrik Dóra has been a member of the Pécs Ballet for twenty-two years. After numerous ‘small’ and ‘large’ roles, performed in an unmistakable style of her own, she recently surprised us again with a few outstanding performances. From her wildly beautiful, ruthlessly perceptive, jealousy-strangled Herodias, to a Medea intoxicated and tormented by her passion and power, and on the same evening, she clumsily wandered as the bumbling, foolish Clown in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” [14]

Her retirement – which, for dancers in Hungary, comes after 25 years of “service” – officially took place in 1985. On February 5, the performance Jutalomjáték (Reward Performance), choreographed by Eck Imre and Tóth Sándor, served as the actual farewell on stage for three founding members of the company: Mária Bretus, Dóra Uhrik, and János Hetényi. Each of them performed one final role that had been pivotal in their careers: Hetényi in Bonds (Kötelékek), Uhrik Dóra in Screams, and Bretus Mária in the lead of The Miraculous Mandarin.

“I do not know how many of us in the audience at the Pécs National Theatre on February 5 realized that we were witnessing a historic moment in dance. For indeed, while the form of a jubilee performance is familiar from theaters, this was anything but ordinary – it was the celebratory closing chord of the first long-lived provincial ballet company, the Pécs Ballet, after a quarter of a century. On the surface, it was ‘just’ three remarkable dancers bidding farewell to the stage, recalling one of their countless roles. Yet it is likely that the departures of Mária Bretus, Dóra Uhrik, and János Hetényi also meant the irrevocable loss of many of the characters they brought to life, since a large part of the company’s repertoire was built upon their technique and personalities, in the smaller and larger compositions of Eck Imre and later Tóth Sándor – approaching their two-hundredth work.” – Thus concluded dance historian Lívia Fuchs, bidding farewell to these three defining artists. [15]

After her official retirement, Uhrik Dóra continued to perform regularly with the Pécs Ballet until 1988, now as a guest artist. (To name just a few of her appearances: Don Juan bolondjai és szeretői voltunk (Don Juan – We Were His Fools and Lovers), Élni vagy meghalni (To Live or to Die), 1986; A törött küzdelem (The Broken Struggle), Kék balett (Blue Ballet), 1987; A szerelem sivataga (The Desert of Love), Vonzódások (Attractions), 1988.) At the same time, she also excelled as a dramatic actress. To mention only two examples: in 1988, she appeared at the Pécsi Harmadik Színház in János Vincze’s production of György Spiró’s tragedy Csirkefej (Chickenhead). In 1998, the Pécs Croatian Theatre staged Árpád Göncz’s monodrama Magyar Médeia (Hungarian Medea), directed by Péter Halásztóth with movement choreography by Antal Vidákovics, and Uhrik Dóra was cast in the title role.

The performance, which critic Péter Molnár Gál attended during its guest showing at the Shure Studio of the Budapest Chamber Theatre, was highly praised: “It has always been evident how skilled dancers are as prose actors. With their whole body and personality, they grasp the rhythm of prose, the music of the text, and convey the artistic value of pauses. Naturally, in accordance with the craft they have learned and practiced since childhood, they express the movement vocabulary of their dramatic roles with clarity. The originality of Uhrik’s dance career lay in breaking away from the saccharine ballerina persona with the help of her master, Eck Imre. She portrayed people with mind as well as body. As a retired prima ballerina, she brings to the stage those tortured, truth-seeking individuals into the communal space even in text-based theatre. Similar actors of her age and uncompromising life experience elsewhere might be called Geraldine Page or Vanessa Redgrave. Uhrik Dóra is a modern actress. Modern directors who look for modernity in the set and stage action rather than in the human being draw upon Uhrik’s artistic knowledge as choreographic practice – they often have her plan the dances in their productions. Uhrik is not a repressed person: she is the head of the dance department at the Pécs Arts Secondary School. She is a teacher, a choreographer, and, in addition, a powerful actress. If I had a theatre, the first production I would stage would be Ibsen’s Ghosts with Uhrik as Mrs. Alving. Her son, Iván Kamarás, could play Osvald. I suggest this because Uhrik is a fine actor, an intriguing artist, someone the audience enjoys watching. She gives joy, artistic teaching, beauty. This was once the essence of theatre.” [16]

Her acting talent was recognized not only by stage directors. In addition to appearing in dance films such as Etűdök kékben (Études in Blue, 1978) and Salome (1984), she also took roles in feature films and television productions. These included the hugely popular television series Linda (1986); Karnyóné (Mrs Karnyó), a musical television production filmed by the Pécs Regional Television Studio (2006); the debut feature Spirál (Spiral, 2022) by the young filmmaker Cecília Felméri; and István Madarász's romantic fantasy Átjáróház (The Gateway House, 2022).

From the 1980s onward, partly approaching the end of her active dance career, Uhrik Dóra frequently took part in productions as an assistant. She collaborated with choreographers such as Sándor Tóth (Brandenburg Concertos II and III, 1980; The Nutcracker, 1985), Péter László (A természet titkos világa (The Secret World of Nature), 1984), and Antal Fodor (Himnusz az élőkért (Hymn for the Living), 1990). Starting in 1986, her creative career flourished: over the following decades, she created applied choreography for numerous musical and theatrical productions at the Budapest Chamber Theatre, József Attila Theatre, Gárdonyi Géza Theatre in Eger, Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen, Hevesi Sándor Theatre in Zalaegerszeg, and the Pécs National Theatre. These included Hawaii rózsája (The Rose of Hawaii, 1986), Hamupipőke (Cinderella, 1989), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1991), Az ember tragédiája (The Tragedy of Man, 1992), Csodálatos vagy, Júlia (You're Wonderful, Julia, 1993), Vértestvérek (Blood Brothers, 1994), Jó estét nyár, jó estét szerelem (Good Evening, Summer, Good Evening, Love, 1995), The Jungle Book (1997), My Fair Lady (1998), Pinocchio (1999), Rigoletto (2000), A kékszakállú vára (Bluebeard's Castle, 2002), and La Traviata (2007)..

In 2010, she served as rehearsal ballet master for the 50th-anniversary revival of The Ballad of Horror – unfortunately a decade after the death of its choreographer, Imre Eck – teaching the production to the Pécs Ballet ensemble. Subsequently, she regularly collaborated as director and dramaturg alongside the company’s artistic director, choreographer Balázs Vincze, on numerous productions. These included Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (stage director); Otello (dramaturge, 2011); Ideje a táncnak gyerekek (It's Time to Dance, Children, stage director and dramaturge, 2013); Carmen (dramaturge, 2014); A kis herceg és a planéták (The Little Prince and the Planets, stage director and dramaturge, 2015); Faust, az elkárhozott (Faust the Damned, dramaturge, 2016); The Taming of the Shrew (dramaturge, 2017); Romeo and Juliet (dramaturge, 2018); Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf (stage director, 2020); and Zorba (dramaturge, 2022). Most recently, in 2024, she contributed as dramaturge to the Pécs Ballet's fairy-tale ballet The Wizard of Oz and the dance production The Three Musketeers, or The Queen's Necklace.

In fact, Uhrik Dóra has never fully retired from the stage. Around the turn of the millennium, in the second half of her fifties and alongside her intensive creative and pedagogical work, she returned as a dancer. At the invitation of choreographer István Herczog (then director of the Pécs Ballet), she took on the role of Madame Hortense in Zorba, a ballet based on Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel with music by Mikis Theodorakis. Her return to the dance stage was highly successful; contemporary critics agreed that her was the standout performance of the production. Critic Péter Molnár Gál once again praised Uhrik’s performance and radiant stage presence:

“…she is at an age when dancers are no longer expected to dance (…), yet she convinces the audience that she is the soloist of Zorba in the role of Mme Hortense. Elegant in her decrepitude. Noble in her social exile. Graceful and radiantly erotic. She exudes love and desire. She embodies frostbitten love, the despair of catching the last train. Humiliated, she seduces. She servilely accepts the younger man’s extorted love. She becomes gently intoxicated. And there is a striking moment: in a mirror, she unexpectedly sees her time-worn face. She sobers painfully. (…) Maya Plisetskaya, after the age of fifty, gave audiences a similarly great stage performance in the role of Anna Karenina. Uhrik preserved secure dance technique through a well-maintained body and artistic personality. Her masterful control, stage knowledge, discipline, and focus deliver a rare experience. She conveys the triumphant self-irony, intellectual superiority, and sparklingly rich personality of a woman of substance. Uhrik Dóra’s performance makes Zorba an exceptional theatrical celebration.” [17]

Katalin Lőrinc also noted in her review: “The real presence… belongs to Madame Hortense, the aging cocotte who devours the last moments of life, desperately clinging to the last ‘great’ opportunities. The author’s and Zorba’s visit to Hortense-Bubulina occurs in such a way that we hardly notice the two men. They simply disappear beside Bubulina. (…) Uhrik Dóra’s magnificent performance (which nearly elevated this role to a lead) is less about the overweight, disheveled, and neglected woman, and more about the infinite hunger for love and will to live, which Uhrik portrays sometimes with overwhelming force, sometimes with extremely subtle, delicate tools.” [18]

From then on, dance roles once again came her way with remarkable regularity. Later in 2000, she appeared in the Pécs Ballet production of The Lady of the Camellias (choreographer István Herczog), and in 2003 she performed Herodias in Gábor Keveházi’s Salome. Between 2002 and 2006, she was a guest artist at the Budapest Operetta Theatre, and in 2007–2008 she danced with the Szeged Contemporary Ballet in Tamás Juronics’s Swan Lake. In 2009, she returned to the Pécs Ballet stage in Giselle (choreographed by Balázs Vincze).

Dóra has always followed the work of contemporary dance creators with keen interest. It was thus natural that she accepted the invitation from the Pál Frenák Company to participate, together with two other veteran dancers closely linked to the Pécs Ballet – Katalin Lőrinc and Pál Lovas – in the premiere of Frenák Pál’s k.Rush, performed in Pécs in 2010 (the year it was European Capital of Culture). She danced in Yvette Bozsik’s version of Swan Lake in 2015, and in 2021, she performed in Vasarely Etudes, a multidisciplinary production inspired by and reflecting on the works of Pécs’s famous native, painter Victor Vasarely, created for the 60th anniversary of the Pécs Ballet.

Uhrik Dóra’s name has become inseparably linked with the Pécs Ballet. Since 2013, under the artistic direction of Balázs Vincze, she has served as the company’s artistic advisor and ballet master. By 2017, the conditions were established for the ballet, previously operating as a department of the Pécs National Theatre, to become an independent entity. From October 2017, with Vincze Balázs as artistic director, Uhrik Dóra, a founding member of the company, assumed the role of managing director of the newly autonomous Pécs Ballet.

Following her Liszt Prize (1976) and Meritorious Artist award (1982), Uhrik received virtually every major honour that could be bestowed upon a Hungarian performing artist in the subsequent decades. These include Hungary’s highest state honors: the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 1997, the Kossuth Prize in 2002, and the Commander’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2011. She has also been awarded numerous prestigious professional, cultural, and audience prizes, including lifetime membership in the Association of Immortals (2010) and the Dance Art Award from the National Association of Dance Pedagogues (2018) and the Hungarian Association of Dancers (2019). In 2022, she was named an Honorary Citizen of Pécs in recognition of her status as one of the most defining personalities in Hungarian dance and as an iconic figure in the city’s cultural life. In 2024, the Hungarian Academy of Arts inducted her into the ranks of the Nation’s Artists for her outstanding lifetime achievements, decades of high-level artistic activity, and contributions to dance and dance pedagogy.

And so we arrive at the present day… On May 5, 2025, at the Budapest Dance Festival, the audience at the National Dance Theatre witnessed a true celebration and culmination of Uhrik Dóra’s career: at 82 years of age, she took the stage in Egy áttáncolt élet (A Life Danced Through), a work reflecting on her own personal journey and artistic career. The Pécs premiere took place on September 6 as part of the 19th Pécs International Dance Meeting. The PB2 Company (the experimental, project-based contemporary ensemble of the Pécs Ballet Foundation) and the National Dance Theatre paid tribute to Uhrik Teodóra’s extraordinarily rich body of work. The piece, written by the artist herself – simultaneously a theatrical experiment, personal reflection, and family confession – was directed and choreographed by Balázs Vincze.

In the performance, her life story is brought to life through dancers of different generations. Young Dóra during her ballet student years is portrayed by Diána Dávid, a student at the Pécs School of Arts, while her professional dancer period is represented by Nina Rónaki of the Pécs Ballet. “An iconic career comes alive in dance sequences, showing the intertwining of vocation and private life, the power of dance, and its timelessness. Family members – including her husband, son, and daughter – also participate (…) Iván Kamarás’s songs, Anna Lovas’s paintings, and Uhrik Dóra’s own poetry complete the atmosphere of the performance.” [19] A key highlight of the piece is the duet between Uhrik Dóra and her husband, Pál Lovas.

Dance Pedagogy Career

Uhrik Dóra is a versatile talent – constantly active, always in motion, and a creative spirit with an entrepreneurial drive. As journalist László Szabó G. aptly put it in an interview: “For six decades she has operated at maximum speed, breaking down walls with her perfectionism, crossing boundaries, defying the impossible.” [20] We have seen her as a dancer and choreographer, a dramatic and musical actress, a film actor, a director, a dramaturg, a costume designer, and even running a modeling school. Remarkably, she herself modeled into her late seventies – her portraits taken by photographer Edit Rácz appeared in the famed fashion magazine Vogue in 2019, and in 2021 she walked the runway at a fashion show in Strasbourg. However, it is evident that her most important role after (and alongside) her dance career has been educating future generations of dancers. Her extensive career as a dance pedagogue, educational organizer, and textbook author represents a vital dimension of her professional life, spanning multiple decades.

Even while actively performing on stage, she consciously prepared for her later pedagogical vocation. In 1977, she earned her ballet master diploma at the State Ballet Institute. In 1978, together with several other Pécs Ballet colleagues, she began teaching at the newly established ballet division of the Pécs School of Arts (founded in 1974 by Imre Eck, partly with the explicit goal of nurturing young talent). From 1991, Dóra Uhrik became head of the dance department and deputy principal of the school. Thanks to the professional concept she developed, the dance division of the school has grown into a high-level, internationally recognized program, providing comprehensive training across all dance genres, as well as in stage performance skills (stage dance, ballet, lifts, folk dance, modern dance, dance history, acting, and musical knowledge). As noted in the current description of the Pécs School of Arts Dance Division: "Hungary’s increasingly rich and diverse dance scene requires dancers who are trained, knowledgeable, and versatile across all dance genres. Our high-level dance education meets this need. The continuous evolution of dance education is driven by the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the art form. High-level companies need dancers with universal cultural knowledge, advanced technique, and stage performance skills within their designated genres. (…) Dance education inherently includes skill development, creative workshop practice, mastery of modern and contemporary techniques, and the staging of presentations and performances."

Uhrik Dóra herself reflected: “…after the stage career ended, a new life phase began: teaching. This transition was not a closure, but rather a new door through which knowledge and experience could continue in a different form.” [21] She added: “…I find joy and fulfilment in educating young people. My work will be judged by the quality of their performances – many years from now.” [22] For over twenty years, she taught full-time, guiding generations of dancers and nurturing numerous talents, of whom she is immensely proud. Many of her students today lead Hungary’s most prominent dance companies – for instance, László Velekei, director of the Győr Ballet; Attila Kozma, director of the Miskolc Ballet; Erika Vasas, soloist with the Frenák Pál Company; and Gergő Czár, soloist and rehearsal director at the Szeged Ballet. Many others have established successful careers with dance companies abroad.

In addition to teaching, she played a key role in developing Hungarian dance education programs and the regulatory frameworks and exam requirements for primary and secondary-level dance training. In 2004, her book Klasszikus balett képeskönyv (Classical Ballet Illustrated) was published for students of primary-level dance schools. From 2001, she served as head of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science at the University of Pécs, and since 2002 she has held the title of honorary university professor. She also helped establish the university’s modern dance pedagogy program.

Through her work as an educator, organizer, and curriculum developer, and through her contributions to university-level dance pedagogy training, Dóra Uhrik has played a major role in shaping Hungarian dance education. Her achievements as a performing artist, theatrical creator, and teacher have significantly contributed to the development of Hungarian dance and dance pedagogy.
