József Kótai’s creative career and his search for an individual artistic path began in 1963, following the completion of his studies at the Iparművészeti Főiskola (College of Applied Arts). Just as the figure of Miklós Borsos and his school-forming sculptural practice exerted a decisive influence during Kótai’s higher education, so too did this intellectual legacy provide the foundations for the creation of his own autonomous artistic world.
