Within Katalin Keserü’s career, three fundamentally significant areas can be distinguished. As a university lecturer, she spent over four decades teaching at Hungarian and foreign universities, educating multiple generations of art historians. As a researcher, she examined nearly every period of the past century and a half, from historicism to contemporary art. She has published several hundred articles and approximately two dozen books and has delivered lectures worldwide. As a museologist, she curated pioneering and landmark exhibitions, frequently involving university students, and became the first elected director of the Műcsarnok (Kunsthalle), later also leading the Ernst Museum. Each of these three professional strands would constitute a significant achievement; together, they represent a trajectory rarely encountered even in international scholarship.

Studies

Keserü’s interest in the arts, and her broad-ranging art historical research, were strongly shaped by her childhood in Pécs. It was not only the city’s exceptionally rich cultural heritage but also its flourishing cultural life in the 1960s that proved influential – the presence of figures such as Sándor Weöres [poet, 1913-1989], Nándor Várkonyi [writer, 1896-1975], and Ferenc Martyn [artist, sculptor 1899 – 1986], the journal Jelenkor, the Modern Picture Gallery, the Ballet Pécs, and the emerging Pécsi Műhely [‘Pécs Workshop’, 1970 – 1980]. She graduated from the Lőwey Gimnázium in 1964 and subsequently enrolled in the ELTE Latin–Hungarian programme as a foundation year student. Concurrently, she worked for one year as an unqualified teacher at the regional primary school of Görcsöny. After her first year, she was admitted to the art history programme, then still functioning as a minor course. She attended classes given by internationally recognised scholars who were considered significant personalities at the time, including the linguist János Zsilka, classical philologist János Harmatta, art historian Dezső Dercsényi, and Géza Entz senior. Her supervisor, Professor Lajos Vayer, introduced her both to international scholarly networks and to research methodology, with a starting point in the artwork itself, alongside all associated data and primary sources. In 1972, she obtained degrees as a secondary school teacher of Latin and Hungarian, and art historian. Her undergraduate thesis was entitled A Rippl-Rónai József-szakirodalom kritikai feldolgozása (lit. A Critical Study of József Rippl-Rónai Scholarship). Subsequently, she worked at the ELTE Department of Art History until 1975 as a part-time lecturer, librarian, and administrator. In 1975, she received her Doctorate in Art History for her dissertation Körösfői-Kriesch Aladár festészeti és iparművészeti munkássága (lit. Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch: Painter and Applied Artist). This work shed light on the then little-known European network of the Gödöllő artists’ colony, revealing previously underexplored British–Hungarian connections in contemporary Hungarian art.

University Teaching

Following the completion of her doctorate, she was invited by Nóra Aradi to join the Art History Research Group of MTA [Hungarian Academy of Sciences], but she chose instead to pursue an academic career. Between 1975 and 1981, she taught contemporary art and foundational subjects at ELTE as an assistant lecturer, later expanding her teaching to nineteenth- and twentieth-century art, as well as architectural and applied art history, alongside museology. At the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary, Faculty of Humanities, she served as professor during the 2015–2016 academic year and as founding head of the Department of Art History, becoming Professor Emeritus in autumn 2016. She was appointed assistant professor in 1981, associate professor in 1995, and full professor in 2008. She has lectured as a visiting scholar at numerous institutions, including Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Janus Pannonius University, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Partium University, Jyväskylä University, Stockholm University, Helsinki University, Carleton University Ottawa, Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań, Jagiellonian University Kraków, University of Latvia Riga, Glasgow University, and Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh.

Over four decades, she supervised numerous PhD, DLA, and undergraduate theses, educating generations of art historians.

Scholarly Achievements and Publications

Katalin Keserü has authored approximately three hundred articles and more than twenty books in Hungarian, English, Italian, and German. Building on her doctoral dissertation, her first monograph was published in 1977, focusing on Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch, a painter and applied artist who was one of the most versatile figures in the cultural life of the turn of the century, and simultaneously the founder of the Gödöllő artists’ colony and a key introducer of the Hungarian Art Nouveau. The value of Keserü’s work lies in the fact that no previous study had adequately evaluated Körösfői-Kriesch’s multifaceted oeuvre—as painter, graphic artist, tapestry designer, architect, interior designer, and stained-glass designer—or established his position within contemporary artistic currents, despite his also being an eminent collector of folk art.

Keserü’s subsequent monographs primarily addressed prominent artists of the turn of the century. Her concise monograph on one of the most significant figures of twentieth-century Hungarian painting, József Rippl-Rónai, published within A művészet világa (lit. The World of Art) series (Rippl-Rónai József, Budapest: Corvina, 1982), was later issued in German in Berlin the following year. She also produced a monograph on Soma Orlai-Petrich (Orlai Petrich Soma, Budapest: Képzőművészeti Kiadó, 1984), an exceptionally productive but hitherto under-researched Hungarian historicist painter.

Among her works on the art of fin-de-siècle Hungary, perhaps the most significant is the 1987 monograph A gödöllői művésztelep (lit. The Gödöllő Artists’ Colony), co-authored with Katalin Gellér. This publication was the first to systematically summarise the activities of the artistic centre established in Gödöllő following Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch’s settlement there in 1901, which remained active until 1920. The authors emphasised that, like other Art Nouveau groups of the period, the Gödöllő colony sought a synthesis of the arts, drawing primary inspiration from folk art. In extensive fieldwork, the artists documented the objects, garments, and decorative motifs of peasant life across the country, preserving both everyday practices and festive customs. This visual and material repertoire subsequently informed their own artistic production. Their ambition, akin to the broader currents of the period, was to develop a distinctive symbolic system and decorative style. Although their achievements were most apparent in applied arts, the colony engaged in all artistic disciplines, from designing houses and furnishings to mural painting and children’s book illustration.

The colony’s central hub and principal organising force was the weaving workshop established in 1904. Alongside Körösfői-Kriesch, its members included Sándor Nagy and his wife, Laura Kriesch, Ede Thoroczkai Wigand, Leo Belmonte, Árpád Juhász, István Zichy, Endre Frecskay, Rezső Mihály, Ödön Moiret, Mariska Undi and her sisters Carla and Jolán, Lenke Boér, and Vilma and Rózsa Frey from Bácska. The Gödöllő artists exhibited both in Hungary and abroad, achieving significant recognition. Their activities were curtailed by the First World War and remained a relatively obscure subject in art historical research until the 1970s. At that time, Keserü and Gellér began tracing the descendants of Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch and Sándor Nagy, collecting extant materials related to the colony. This research culminated not only in the monograph but also in the first permanent exhibition on the Gödöllő artists’ colony in Gödöllő in 1981. Keserü subsequently presented the topic at the Association of Art Historians conference in the United Kingdom. Her study became the inaugural article in the first issue of Design History, now considered a classic journal.

A decade later, in her monograph Rippl-Rónai, Csontváry, and Gulácsy (Budapest: Noran, 1999), she examined the emergence of modern art in Hungary at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through the oeuvres of these three outstanding artists. Keserü highlighted the dual character of fin-de-siècle art: while it retained traditional constraints of genre, technique, and subject matter, it simultaneously manifested a blending and unification of genres, alongside the search for new visualisation principles. Keserü traced these transformations through the works of the three painters.

Katalin Keserü had already planned in the 1980s to explore the oeuvre of the enigmatic and unjustly neglected architect Ede Toroczkai Wigand, but this could only be realised in 2008, following research conducted together with her university students (Toroczkai Wigand Ede 1869–1945, Budapest: Holnap, 2008). Although Toroczkai Wigand’s body of work bears considerable similarities to that of Károly Kós and even preceded his famous contemporary in many respects, his significance in public consciousness has remained considerably lower, and his memory was on the verge of obscurity. Prior to Keserü’s monograph, no dedicated volume had addressed the place of Toroczkai Wigand – a key figure in Hungarian architecture – in the historiography of Hungarian art. The meticulous handbook she produced illuminated every facet of Toroczkai’s work and provided insight not only into the entirety of his oeuvre but also its reception and the broader artistic influences of the period.

The monograph revealed that Toroczkai’s activities were far more diverse than previously assumed. Although trained as a decorative painter, he initially achieved notable success as a furniture designer, with works successfully exhibited at international expositions of the fin-de-siècle. Most of his architectural output, however, was realised in the towns and villages of Székelyföld [now: Szeklerland, a historic and ethnographic area in present-day Romania], where he designed houses harmoniously integrated into the landscape, drawing upon local folk traditions. Additionally, he illustrated books, worked as an interior designer, architectural draftsman, and stained-glass designer, and explored mythological themes in poetry. He also studied the Hun-Hungarian mythological tradition and incorporated it into his artistic practice, while publishing scholarly articles. The volume presented individual buildings (including those still standing), traced their histories, documented the reception of Toroczkai Wigand’s publications, and collated his applied arts projects – ranging from carpet and stained-glass design to previously little-known book and garden designs. Keserü dedicated a separate chapter to a comprehensive database, listing his architectural works, writings, and relevant bibliographic references.

Keserü’s work on the art and artists of the period, and the underlying artistic currents, was synthesised in her 2007 volume A századforduló (lit. The Fin-de-Siècle) (Kijárat Kiadó, Budapest, 2007). This period – arguably the most complex in art history, characterised by the simultaneous presence of multiple style-like phenomena (‘ism’) alongside enduring stylistic categories – had long been perceived merely as the terminus of previous artistic development, interrupting the linear historical narrative of successive styles or movements. Consequently, the fin-de-siècle was often regarded as a transitional, confused, and non-autonomous phase. Keserü’s collection of studies, however, highlighted connections that allow a deeper understanding of not only the artistic styles of the period but also the broader cultural transformations underway. It demonstrated how, within contemporary modern art, traditional motifs and concepts re-emerged and gained increasing prominence as part of the revival movement, how various artistic movements sought to overcome the centre–periphery dichotomy, and how emerging syncretism – the encounter of Western and Eastern cultures, ‘high’ and popular, ‘primitive,’ applied, or social art – shaped the distinctive features of turn-of-the-century art.

Keserü’s professional reputation is not limited to the art of the period spanning the Habsburg autocracy of the 1850s to the Second World War. Among Hungarian art historians, she was a pioneer in addressing contemporary art. Her 1993 volume Variációk a pop artra. Fejezetek a magyar művészetből 1950–1990 (lit. Variations on Pop Art: Chapters from Hungarian Art 1950–1990) (Budapest, 1993) represented the first attempt in Hungary to map a style movement within the country’s late twentieth-century art. In this book, Keserü traced the emergence of Pop Art antecedents in 1950s Hungary, its offshoots in the 1960s, and its revival in the 1970s and 1980s. Compared with the international Pop Art movement, she demonstrated how the style developed distinct characteristics under socialism, with works often iconographically divergent from American and British Pop Art, and frequently layered with ambiguity and political resonance. Beyond the developmental narrative, the book includes portraits of domestic Pop Art artists, presents their works, and addresses the movement’s afterlife and connections to conceptualism, individual mythologies, and other artistic developments of the 1970s. Her monograph, effectively unprecedented, redefined the art historical understanding of Hungarian visual culture between 1950 and 1990, making the trajectory of ‘official’ art intelligible by showing its counter currents, reconfigurations, and opposing strategies, and remains one of the most important modern art historical syntheses.

Her 1998 monograph Az emlékezés a kortárs művészetben (lit. Memory in Contemporary Art) (Budapest: Noran, 1998) pursued the dual aim of establishing a new theoretical model of art while using this framework to interpret Hungarian art of the 1980s and 1990s, providing a rich and reliable inventory of works. In her own words, the book represents an attempt at understanding, exploring whether (artistic) memory evolves in ways that render the changes in art describable, and thus allows contemporary artistic phenomena to be situated within a coherent system.

A groundbreaking achievement in the analysis of modern art is Keserü’s edited volume Modern Magyar nőművészettörténet (lit. Modern Hungarian Women Artists) (Budapest: Noran, 2000). Drawing on feminist and gender studies perspectives, the book examines female artistic biographies and presents women’s contributions to specific phases and genres of modernism, offering a nuanced understanding of the nature of women’s art. In the included essay “A második nem” (lit. “The Second Sex”), she was the first to analyse and systematise the period of women’s art from the 1960s to the turn of the millennium.

A similar scholarly approach characterises her monograph on the life and work of the world-renowned pioneering female artist Amrita Sher-Gil (Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941) helye két kontinens festészetében [lit. Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941) in the Art of Two Continents], Budapest, 2007). Born in Budapest to a Hungarian mother, Mária Antónia Erdőbaktay Gottesmann, and an Indian aristocrat, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil, Sher-Gil tragically died young but created, in the 1930s, an art in India that was European in conception, establishing India’s image within the canon of universal art. Today, her oeuvre is regarded as a national treasure in India, whereas in Hungary, she had received no scholarly attention prior to Keserü’s monograph.

Museology

Although museological activity constitutes a distinct thematic chapter in Katalin Keserü’s life, it cannot be entirely separated from either her work as a university professor or her scholarly research. Firstly, over the decades, she involved her students in the creation of numerous exhibitions. Secondly, the exhibitions she curated were frequently closely linked to her current research topics; in other words, the publications and monographs that appeared alongside these exhibitions were completed and enriched through their realisation as museum displays. Thirdly, Keserü did not conceive of museology merely as a practical endeavour but integrated it with theoretical concepts and the continually evolving trends within the field.

As early as 1977, Keserü, together with Katalin Gellér, organised an exhibition A gödöllői művésztelep (The Gödöllő Artists’ Colony) at the Katona József Museum in Kecskemét, linked to their research and Keserü’s doctoral dissertation. The exhibition was later established as a permanent display at the Gödöllő City Museum under the same title. Subsequent monographs on major artists were likewise associated with museum exhibitions: for example, Amrita Sher-Gil (2001) and Rippl-Rónai József and James Pitcairn-Knowles (2004) at the Ernst Museum, and Ede Toroczkai Wigand, Architect and Applied Artist (1869–1945) (2008) at the Gödöllő City Museum.

Keserü’s interest in contemporary art also first manifested in her museum exhibitions. Although the study of contemporary art could not yet serve as the subject of scholarly research at the time, Keserü and a small number of pioneers were already investigating it. In 1980, she curated, together with Ildikó Nagy, an exhibition on the 1970s titled Tendenciák I. Új művészet 1970-ben (Tendencies I: New Art in 1970) at the Óbuda Gallery, which was the first exhibition on this period to be held in an official venue. In 1982, she organised Többféle realizmus (Multiple Realisms) at the Fészek Gallery, which was followed in 1989 by Új-dadaizmus Magyarországon (Neo-Dadaism in Hungary) and, in 1993–1994, the travelling exhibition Hungarica – a 80-as évek magyar művészete (Hungarica – Hungarian Art of the 1980s) at Hungarian cultural institutes abroad and at the Palazzo Braschi in Rome.

The 1993 retrospective exhibition Variációk a pop artra – Fejezetek a magyar művészet történetéből 1950–1990 (Variations on Pop Art: Chapters from the History of Hungarian Art 1950–1990) at the Ernst Museum was conceived with the aim of expanding the understanding of this movement beyond its well-known Western history, considering the distinct connotations of popular art in Hungary. Keserü also co-organised Művészettörténet a kortárs művészetben (Art History in Contemporary Art) at the Contemporary Art Institute in Dunaújváros, together with students from the ELTE Department of Art History. The exhibition „A második nem" – Nőművészet Magyarországon 1960–2000 (The Second Sex – Women’s Art in Hungary 1960–2000) at the Ernst Museum in 2000, and Women at the Gödöllő Artists’ Colony at the Glasgow School of Art in 2004, reflected a feminist perspective, highlighting the contribution of female artists – who faced a more difficult trajectory than their male counterparts – and the revival of female myths to the renewal of art.

Exhibitions reflecting ideological or conceptual frameworks are also of significance. For instance, the 1987 exhibition Mágikus művek (Magical Works), initially held at the Budapest Gallery and later in Szombathely, sought to present the complex, often magical functions and characteristics of artworks. Similarly, Painted Dreams at the Freud Museum in London, and its expanded version, Megfestett álmok. Mese, látomás, álom a magyar művészetben 1903-1918 (Painted Dreams: Fairy Tale, Vision, Dream in Hungarian Art 1903–1918) at the Ernst Museum, highlighted representations of inner vision, imagination, and memory emerging around the turn of the twentieth century. The collaboratively curated exhibition Közös tér. Az etnikai identitás és a kulturális identitás kérdése a Kárpát-medence művészetében (Shared Space: Ethnic and Cultural Identity in the Art of the Carpathian Basin) (Ernst Museum, 2006) addressed three dimensions: the themes of ethnic minorities within the Carpathian Basin, the meaning and significance of dual identities, and works reflecting minority and identity issues. Keserü also presented papers and participated in the organisation of numerous domestic and international conferences.

Keserü’s museological activity also included her role as an institutional leader. In late 1992, she was appointed Director of the Kunsthalle (Műcsarnok). During her tenure, the institution underwent a complete reconstruction, and within the relatively brief two-year appointment, ninety exhibitions were held. She initiated the promotion of regionalism and the study of contemporary regional art, realised both through regional exhibitions (e.g., Duna. Visegrád, Salamon Tower, 1993) and through collaboration with invited international curators and artists, as well as international conferences hosted by the institution. Her directorship significantly expanded the institution’s international connections, aided in part by the success of the Hungarian pavilion at the 1993 Venice Biennale.

Between 2000 and 2007, Katalin Keserü was appointed Director of the newly independent Ernst Museum. She assembled the professional staff from her former students, establishing a dedicated team. In continuing the legacy of Lajos Ernst, the museum focused on works from the turn of the twentieth century to the present, encompassing the entirety of the twentieth century, with numerous accompanying programmes to deepen the visitor experience. In many cases, exhibitions were drawn from former student theses. In addition to art from the turn of the century, the museum presented lesser-known periods and regions, including Hungarian art in Romania, the 1940s, and the role of photography in the 1970s, while also providing a platform for contemporary artists and drawing attention to emerging contemporary phenomena. An archive was created, collecting documents from the museum’s history, and the building’s interior structure was redesigned to reveal original spaces and walls. Keserü resigned from the directorship on 1 January 2007, expressing her disagreement with a top-down institutional restructuring. With the 2011 multilingual exhibition A szecesszió nagymesterei (Gaudí, Horta, Lechner) (lit. Masters of Art Nouveau (Gaudí, Horta, Lechner), presented in Barcelona, Brussels, and Budapest, she introduced the concept of outdoor exhibitions to the museum’s programming.

Throughout her career, Keserü has been a member of numerous national and international professional organisations, including the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA), the College Art Association, Historians of German, Scandinavian, and Central European Art, the Association of Art Historians, and AICA (International Association of Art Critics). She has received multiple international fellowships, including from the British Academy, Rome, Finland, India, and Germany, and has been honoured with prestigious awards: the Gödöllő City Medal (1981), the Pasteiner Medal of the Hungarian Archaeological and Art Historical Society (1989), the Munkácsy Prize (1990), the Noémi Ferenczy Prize (1992), the Simonyi Research Fellowship (2000), the Széchenyi Prize (2007), and the Prima Primissima Award (2010).

In reflecting on Keserü’s oeuvre, it is evident that her persona and reputation are akin to those of the artists she has studied and presented. She is tireless and diligent, like Orlai Petrich Soma; broad-minded and versatile, like Ede Toroczkai Wigand; and a forward-looking organiser and workshop founder, like Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch.
