In his poem, the English poet Alfred Tennyson plucks a flower from its place and delights in it; Bashō, the Japanese poet, does not break it off, yet the sense of wonder is no less intense. Bashō receives the sight into his thoughts, contemplating it with simple attentiveness, without violent conceptualisation, whereas Tennyson’s analytical admiration leads to the flower’s death.
