Tamás Gergely Kucsera
Starting a Career, Studies
Born in 1976 in Budapest, he graduated from the Szilágyi Erzsébet Secondary School where he attended a class specialising in Spanish. He was interested in the arts and attracted to public life already as a child; even at the beginning of his studies in high school or at the University of Arts and Humanities, he was trained as an opera singer and vocal soloist, and he was a member of the choirs of his schools from childhood.
He graduated from different universities: in sociology (with specialisation in political sociology and sociology of law) (Faculty of Humanities, PPKE), philosophy (Faculty of Humanities, ELTE) and teaching (Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology, ELTE), and international studies (specialisation in Europe) (Institut européen des hautes études internationales, Nice, France, with partial studies in Germany and Italy) and in Economics (MBA) (PTE Faculty of Economics). He earned a PHD summa cum laude in political science and in philosophy (PTE), and a habilitated doctorate in the field of Art History from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME).
He studied sociology, philosophy, humanities, teaching, international relations and economics, as well as Hungarian language and literature and aesthetics.
He was a scholarship holder of the Faludi Ferenc Academy, the adult education programme of the Jesuits in Hungary, and a scholarship holder of the Prohászka Ottokár Academic Workshop of the Faculty of Humanities at PPKE.
He creates community easily and is aware of situations close to the establishment of an institution: his involvement in the Student Union (HÖK) movement is proof of this. At the newly founded Catholic University there was a student-teacher community, where he accepted their invitation. Later he organised and founded student unions at the universities of the historic churches; and then coordinated them for more than a year, together with the then student leader of the University of the Reformed Church, Judit Bertalan, in 1995-1996.
Besides founding institutions and community organising, he has been teaching since he was a university student.

Secretary General of the MMA
"You cannot sustain a society without dignity." – Dr. Tamás Gergely Kucsera
In 2011, he was a member of the expert panel preparing the establishment of the Hungarian Academy of Arts [MMA] as a public body; he was elected on 5 November 2011 and subsequently re-elected in 2016 and served as the Secretary General of this public body for ten years.
Following the foundation of the MMA as a public body, in 2012 as Secretary General, he worked on establishing the operational standards, followed by a period of ongoing development.
In 2018, the MMA Secretariat moved to a new home, the Andrássy Road Office Building, where its main task is to maintain coordinative, institutional workflows. Initiated and developed individual and group development of Secretariat colleagues, their participation in professional and language training to improve organisational efficiency.
He plays a role in MMA’s domestic development and international outreach activities, and currently in the day-to-day running of operations. He has also initiated several strategic decisions. He is one of the authors of the rules for the Artist of the Nation Award. He collaborated with academics Sándor Sára and József Finta on the concept, under the guidance of President György Fekete, and in November 2014 the first awards were presented; he also proposed the creation of a career award, to be granted by the Minister of Culture, in parallel with the artist's lifetime annuity.
He initiated the creation of the Academy's theoretical journal Magyar Művészet, the introduction of the artist's lifetime annuity, the institution of non-academic membership of the public body, and the establishment of the MMA Institute for Art Theory and Methodology (MMA MMKI), where he also took a role on the scientific advisory board. The aim of the MMA MMKI is to approach classical questions from the perspective of contemporary art and social phenomena; the institute's mission is to examine artistic positions, critical aspects and the institutional system of art, with theoretical and practical assistance.
As he said earlier, the task of the research institute of the multidisciplinary academy is not to go from Kodály to Dubrovay, but rather the other way round. This is an unusual vision among institutions and specialists who think and work primarily in terms of history. As he says of contemporary Hungarian art theory and cultural dissemination practices and the state's responsibility for them: 'We have several gaps that need to be filled, because it is great to reflect on the literary work of Sándor Petőfi’s wife, Júlia Szendrey [1828-1868, wife of the great Romantic poet, Sándor Petőfi] in a state institution – and to turn them into a research programme reinforced by a campaign. But [...] even after more than a decade, the legacy of Győző Határ was still in boxes in the same place. The state must also provide funding support and maintenance preferences for running its institutions." He admits that art theory starts from practice and arrives at theoretical conclusions, while the intellectual path of art philosophy is the opposite.
At his suggestion, a ninth section was created within MMA, bringing together academics working in the field of art theory.
He was a driving force behind the creation of the independent MMA Publishing House, which, as a commercial company, can maintain a stronger presence in the field of Hungarian publishing and distribution.
Between 2014 and 2020 he was the co-organiser of the series of seven Dialogue on the Future of Hungarian Theatre conferences and co-organised the related Secretary General's Committee to review the issues of the Hungarian performing arts.
In 2013, he initiated, developed and was the professional leader of the MMA's three-year fellowship scheme, which was preceded by the 2014–2015 conceptual history fellowship programme, jointly run by the MMA and the Molnár Tamás Research Centre of the Ludovika University of Public Service. In 2017, he drafted the detailed rules of the scholarship scheme, and in 2018 and 2019 he coordinated the working group that developed and developed the implementation procedures. He was the initiator and developer of the other elements of the MMA's career model for artists and the academic awards scheme.
He also managed the MMA's collaborations, which included establishing and maintaining contacts with an ever-widening range of civil, professional, governmental and foreign partners. These included liaising with the Society for Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge, the National Association of Large Families and the National Association of Local Televisions, the Hungarian Wine Academy, and the Hungarian Patronage Plus Programme, of which he was the initiator, and the cultural evenings of the Hungarian Academy of Justice.
On behalf of MMA, he coordinated the preparation of the György Harag and Miklós Mészöly commemorative years, the proposals supporting the curating of the intellectual legacy of the academic couple Mária Lugossy and Zoltán Bohus; in 2020-2021 he ran the Secretary General's Committee supporting the preservation of the work of Pál Kő, ‘Lujos’ in Mohács.
He was involved in the launch of the MMA's literary and film encyclopaedias and the series on philosophy of art.
He worked on the cooperation between the National Cultural Fund and the Hungarian Academy of Arts: while earlier half of the delegates of the expert committees were governmental and half of them were professional, now one third of the delegates are governmental, one third professional and one third public, the number of art committees has increased, and the public body has a meaningful say in the structuring of resources.
Representing the MMA on the Public Service Board, participating in the monitoring of the implementation of the Public Service Code, helping to ensure the continued achievement of the public service objectives and fundamental principles of media service.
As a representative of the Academy, which is also strengthening its cultural diplomacy, he participated in the artistic preparation of the opening of the Elfolyó idő (lit. Fluxing Time) series in Seoul and Tokyo, the Cheongju Biennale of Applied Arts in South Korea and the Israeli Hungarian Cultural Year, among others. For years, he coordinated the presentation of the exhibition of Imre Makovecz's life's work on three continents, as well as the series of exhibitions on the centenary of Hungarian animation. During his negotiations, he initiated the renovation of László Nagy's memorial house in Smolyan [Bulgaria], which has since been completed by the Bulgarian partner. He participated twice in the Los Angeles Hungarian Film Festival, for which he was later patron. Until 2016, he prepared the MMA's inter-academy agreements, successfully negotiated with the Polish partner academy, the Chinese partner institution, the Slovenian and Macedonian partner institutions, and from 2012 he was also continuously involved in the MMA's cultural presence in the Carpathian Basin.

His work has been recognised with several awards. In 2013, PTE awarded him the title of Honorary Associate Professor.
